From our sightings database, the Breitling 81950 has one confirmed celebrity appearance — and it is a significant one. Jean-Paul Belmondo, the French actor who spent decades as one of Europe's most bankable and physically commanding screen presences, wore the reference on screen in Claude Lelouch's 1988 film 'Itinéraire d'un enfant gâté.' That Belmondo chose — or was costumed in — a Breitling Chronomat 81950 for a role about a self-made man walking away from everything he built says something about the watch's register at the time: it read as the choice of someone with substance, not someone trying to impress. Belmondo's association with the reference gives it a distinctly European, cinema-rooted provenance that separates it from the American-celebrity watch pile.

Because the Breitling 81950 belongs to the first generation of the revived Chronomat line — relaunched in 1984 under Ernest Schneider — examples in good condition are now strictly a secondary-market proposition. There is no retail availability; production ended decades ago. Collector interest in early Chronomat references has grown steadily as the broader vintage Breitling market matured, and the 81950 benefits from being the reference that effectively restarted the Chronomat nameplate. Prices on the grey market vary considerably depending on condition, dial originality and bracelet completeness, but documented examples with intact riders tabs and matching bracelets command a meaningful premium over rough survivors.

The 81950 is a steel, manually-wound chronograph built around the Valjoux 7750 movement, produced in the mid-1980s. Belmondo's on-screen wearing, in a film that was a major French box-office hit, almost certainly introduced the reference to a wide audience at the moment the revived Chronomat was still establishing itself.
