Few objects in television history have done more narrative work per dollar than the Casio Databank CA53W-1. Strapped to Bryan Cranston's wrist for the majority of Breaking Bad's 62-episode run between 2008 and 2013, this $25 resin calculator watch became an unlikely icon of one of the medium's most celebrated dramas.

The Casio CA53W-1 is a direct descendant of the calculator-watch boom of the early 1980s, when Casio pioneered the category with functional keypads embedded into wristwatch cases. The CA53W runs on a CR2016 battery and houses an 8-digit calculator alongside a dual-time digital display, stopwatch, and daily alarm. The case is injection-molded resin, the strap black rubber, and the entire package weighs almost nothing. Water resistance is rated to 50 meters. It is utilitarian to the point of austerity — which is precisely the point.

Costume designer Kathleen Detoro selected the CA53W-1 for Walter White with clear intentionality. In the show's early seasons, the watch signals White's ordinariness: a middle-class man of modest means and invisible presence. As White's transformation into drug kingpin Heisenberg progresses, the watch remains — a stubborn artifact of the man he once was, rendered increasingly incongruous against his growing power and violence. It is one of the more quietly effective uses of a timepiece in scripted drama.

Bryan Cranston's association with the CA53W-1 has given the reference a pop-culture permanence that no amount of marketing could manufacture. The watch appears on fan merchandise, in academic essays on the show's visual language, and in costume replicas worldwide. Casio itself has never needed to capitalize on the connection — the reference sells on its own merits and its newfound mythology simultaneously.

On the market, the Casio Databank CA53W-1 retails for approximately $25 and trades on the secondary market for roughly the same amount — occasionally slightly above retail when listed explicitly as the Breaking Bad watch. It is one of the rare cases where cultural significance and price point exist in complete contradiction, and arguably all the more compelling for it.
