Introduction to Clay Regazzoni

Clay Regazzoni was one of the most celebrated racing drivers of the 1970s, a Swiss-Italian pilot whose career at the highest levels of Formula 1 made him a fixture at the front of the grid. Born Gianclaudio Giuseppe Regazzoni in 1939 in Porza, Switzerland, he rose through the junior formulae before making his F1 debut in 1970, immediately scoring a victory at the Italian Grand Prix. He went on to race for Ferrari, Brabham, Williams, and several other top constructors over a career spanning more than a decade, claiming five Grand Prix victories and finishing runner-up in the 1974 Formula 1 World Championship. A serious accident at the 1980 United States Grand Prix West in Long Beach left him paralyzed from the waist down, but Regazzoni continued to compete in adapted motorsport events, demonstrating the same determination that defined his racing years. He passed away in 2006.

The Clay Regazzoni watch collection, as documented through period photography and motorsport archives, centers on his well-known association with Heuer — now Tag Heuer — during the brand's deep involvement in Formula 1 sponsorship throughout the 1970s. Regazzoni was closely linked to the Heuer Silverstone, a bold, cushion-cased chronograph that Heuer introduced in the early 1970s and named after the famous British racing circuit. The Silverstone's angular, integrated bracelet design and motorsport credentials made it a natural fit for an active Ferrari pilot, and Regazzoni was among the drivers photographed wearing the reference during that period.

What the collection reflects is a direct product of its era. Heuer's sponsorship of Ferrari and Regazzoni's own profile as a frontline driver meant that his watch choices were less about personal curation and more about a genuine, working relationship between a racing pilot and a timing brand. The Silverstone he wore was not a ceremonial piece — it was the kind of watch a man wore to the circuit, to the paddock, and away from it. That context gives it weight beyond the object itself.
