Introduction to Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha

Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha was a Thai entrepreneur and billionaire who built King Power, a duty-free retail empire that became one of Thailand's most recognisable commercial success stories. Born in Bangkok in 1958, he transformed a single duty-free concession into a nationwide retail network with exclusive contracts across Thailand's major international airports. He is perhaps best known internationally as the owner of Leicester City Football Club, which he acquired in 2010. Under his ownership, Leicester achieved one of the most improbable title victories in English football history, winning the Premier League in the 2015–16 season at odds of 5,000 to 1. Vichai died in October 2018 when the helicopter he was travelling in crashed outside the King Power Stadium shortly after a match. He was 60 years old.

The Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha watch collection, as documented through public appearances and photography, reflects the restrained confidence of a man who had little need to broadcast his wealth loudly. He was photographed wearing the Patek Philippe Nautilus Travel Time Chronograph in stainless steel, reference 5990/1A — a choice that speaks to genuine horological knowledge rather than simple brand recognition. The 5990/1A is a technically dense watch, housing calibre CH 28-520 C FUS, a self-winding movement that integrates a flyback chronograph with a travel time complication, allowing the wearer to track two time zones simultaneously while retaining full chronograph functionality. It is the kind of watch that rewards understanding.

The Patek Philippe 5990/1A in stainless steel is a relatively understated configuration within the Nautilus range — less immediately conspicuous than gold variants, but arguably more considered. For a man who moved between Bangkok boardrooms, European football clubs, and international business dealings across multiple time zones, a dual-time chronograph carries practical logic alongside its mechanical complexity. The single confirmed sighting suggests a collector who wore watches with purpose rather than for display, which is consistent with the broader character of someone who built a global business profile without seeking celebrity attention.

The Patek Philippe 5990/1A is one of the most technically complex sport watches ever built, combining a flyback chronograph with a dual-time zone display inside the iconic Nautilus case — a combination achieved through a movement that took the Geneva manufacture years to develop. Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the Thai billionaire who orchestrated one of sport's greatest upsets by guiding Leicester City to the 2015–16 Premier League title, wore this reference as a fitting emblem of a man who operated confidently across time zones and continents.
