At the circuits of late-1960s Grand Prix racing, Nina Rindt was a constant presence — elegant, composed, and always wearing the Universal Geneve Compax ref. 885103/2 she used to time laps for her husband Jochen. That habitual pairing of woman and watch was enough to permanently brand the reference in collector vocabulary. Decades later, the 'Nina Rindt' is one of the most recognizable nicknames in vintage horology.

The Universal Geneve Compax ref. 885103/2 is powered by the Valjoux 72, a hand-wound column-wheel chronograph movement widely regarded as one of the finest ebauches of the 20th century. The cal. 72 features a horizontal clutch and a 17-jewel construction delivering reliable, tactile chronograph operation. The case measures approximately 36mm in stainless steel and houses the signature black glossy dial with three contrasting white subsidiary registers — small seconds at nine, 30-minute counter at three, and 12-hour counter at six. Pump pushers flank the crown at two and four o'clock. The overall architecture is clean, purposeful, and immediate.

Collectors have long drawn comparisons between the Compax ref. 885103/2 and the Rolex Daytona ref. 6241. Both share the Valjoux 72 movement, similar case proportions, and a black dial with white registers. The Universal Geneve, however, carries a biographical narrative that the Daytona cannot replicate. The 'Nina Rindt' designation transforms a superlative chronograph into a historical document — a direct artifact of Formula 1's most emotionally charged era. Jochen Rindt remains the only posthumous World Champion in F1 history, having died at Monza in September 1970 before the title was mathematically secured.

Nina Rindt, an Austrian-born model, was among the most photographed figures in the paddock during the late 1960s. Her association with the Universal Geneve Compax was not promotional — she wore it as a functional tool — which only deepens its authenticity for collectors.

On today's vintage market, pristine examples of the Universal Geneve Compax ref. 885103/2 with original glossy black dials and matching bracelet or strap command serious prices at auction, typically trading between $8,000 and $20,000 depending on condition, dial originality, and provenance. Compared to an equivalent-condition Daytona ref. 6241, the 'Nina Rindt' remains relatively accessible — a fact that experienced collectors consider a persistent and exploitable anomaly.
