Adam Clayton, bassist for U2 and one of the most knowledgeable watch collectors in the music world, was recently spotted wearing a platinum A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Up/Down Lumen, reference 405.034 — a limited edition of just 200 pieces that sits firmly among the most coveted German complications of the past decade.

The Datograph Up/Down Lumen is built around Lange's in-house calibre L951.6, a manually wound flyback chronograph movement that also incorporates a power-reserve indicator — the 'Up/Down' of the name. Running at 18,000 vph with a 60-hour power reserve, the movement is finished to Lange's signature standard: rhodiumed three-quarter plate, hand-engraved balance cock, blued screws, and bevelling executed entirely by hand. What sets the Lumen edition apart is the dial treatment: a fumé-style dark surface overlaid with a chapter ring and subdial indexes treated with a high-performance green phosphor. In darkness, the watch becomes something genuinely other — functional luminescence on a grand complication, a combination Lange had never previously attempted at this level.

The platinum 41mm case of ref. 405.034 deepens the collector appeal considerably. Platinum imparts a cooler, denser presence than white gold and pairs with the Lumen's nocturnal aesthetic in a way that feels deliberate rather than incidental. Introduced in 2020 as a limited series, the 200-piece run sold out rapidly, and secondary-market demand has been consistent ever since. Among Datograph variants — and there are many — the Lumen occupies a distinct niche: it appeals both to complication purists and to collectors drawn by the visual drama of the phosphor effect.

Clayton is no casual watch enthusiast. The Dublin-born musician has been photographed over the years with references spanning Patek Philippe, Richard Mille, and independent marques, demonstrating a collecting philosophy that prizes technical substance alongside aesthetics. A Lange Datograph in platinum sits squarely within that sensibility — understated from a distance, extraordinary on examination.

The A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Up/Down Lumen ref. 405.034 carried a UK list price of approximately £85,000 at launch, translating to roughly $105,000–$108,000 USD at prevailing rates. On the grey market, completed examples have traded above list, reflecting the limited production and sustained collector demand for platinum Datograph references.
