Who & what: Stainless Steel Rolex Oyster Dato Compax Triple Calendar Chronograph Reference 6236 – Emilio Pucci

An archival photograph, unearthed by collector account @niccoloy, shows Emilio Pucci — the Florentine aristocrat who revolutionized postwar fashion with his signature psychedelic prints — wearing a stainless steel Rolex Oyster Dato Compax, almost certainly the Ref. 6236, the last and most sought-after chapter in one of Rolex's most storied chronograph families.

The Oyster Dato Compax series ran from approximately 1947 to 1962 across four distinct references: the 4767, 5036, 6036, and finally the 6236. What set the 4767 apart at launch was historic: it was Rolex's first chronograph to combine a triple calendar complication — displaying date, day of the week, and month — with the brand's Oyster waterproof case. The movement at the heart of these watches was the Valjoux 72C, a manually wound column-wheel chronograph ebauche with triple calendar module, a robust and well-regarded caliber that forms the backbone of some of the most collectible vintage chronographs ever made. The Ref. 6236 features a 38mm Oyster case, a distinctive stepped bezel, and typically a silver or black dial with three contrasting subdials — a composition that reads as remarkably modern even today.

The nickname 'Jean-Claude Killy' was cemented in collector vocabulary after the French alpine skier — triple gold medalist at the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympics and later a Rolex ambassador — was photographed wearing the 6036 and 6236 repeatedly. The association gave these references a mythology that transcends the watch world. Among serious vintage Rolex collectors, a Jean-Claude Killy in original, unpolished condition with a crisp dial represents a genuine grail acquisition.

Emilio Pucci's appearance in this image adds an entirely different layer of cultural resonance. Born into Florentine nobility, Pucci built a fashion empire beloved by Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, and the entire international jet set. That he gravitated toward the Dato Compax — technically serious, understated in steel, yet carrying enormous horological prestige — is entirely consistent with the taste of a man who understood luxury without ostentation.

On the current market, authentic examples of the Rolex Ref. 6236 in honest, unrestored condition regularly exceed $80,000 to $120,000 at major auction houses, with exceptional specimens or those with documented provenance pushing well beyond that ceiling. No official retail price exists for this long-discontinued reference.
