The Rolex Milgauss was introduced in 1954 with a specific purpose – to cater to the needs of physicists and scientists who had to conduct experiments on magnetism. The name "Milgauss" is a combination of the French word "Mille", meaning thousand, and "Gauss", which is a unit of magnetic flux density.

The Milgauss was designed to resist magnetic fields up to 1000 Oersted, which is ten times what a regular watch can withstand before losing accuracy. Despite its impressive capabilities, the Milgauss was a very specialized model and never gained mass appeal. Towards the end of its production run, the ref.1019 (1963-1988) was made only on order, further cementing its exclusivity.
