Actor Justin Theroux spotted wearing IWC

Justin Theroux appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this week wearing the IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 reference IW328901 on his wrist — one of the most talked-about reissues to emerge from Watches & Wonders Geneva 2023. For a watch that only returned to production this year, its television debut came fast.

The IW328901 is the entry point of IWC's revived Ingenieur family: a 40mm stainless steel case, anti-reflective sapphire crystal, and a clean black dial with applied hour markers that deliberately echoes the sports-watch language Gerald Genta established with his landmark 1976 redesign. That redesign — which introduced the integrated five-link bracelet and the concentric circle dial motif — didn't invent the Ingenieur (the original dates to 1955, engineered for resistance to magnetic fields), but it gave the line its defining visual character and collector cachet. IWC's 2023 revival honors that lineage closely without resorting to pastiche.

Inside sits IWC's Calibre 32111, a manufacture movement with a 72-hour power reserve, beating at 28,800 vph, and delivered with IWC's soft-iron inner case for magnetic protection up to 40,000 A/m. The bracelet, one of the most discussed elements of the launch, is executed in polished and brushed stainless steel with a double-push-button folding clasp — a credible attempt to match the integrated-bracelet standard set by rivals at considerably higher price points.

Collector reception has been measured but positive. The Ingenieur IW328901 occupies a competitive space alongside the Tudor Black Bay 58, the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra, and entry-level Audemars Piguet Royal Oak alternatives — though IWC's positioning leans harder on heritage than on exclusivity. The watch is not difficult to obtain at retail, which keeps grey-market premiums modest.

Theroux, best known for his roles in Mulholland Drive and The Leftovers, has shown consistent taste for understated, technically credible watches. The IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40 ref. IW328901 retails at approximately $7,200 and trades near retail on the secondary market — a sign of a release that has found its audience without manufacturing artificial scarcity.
