Actor Steve McQueen spotted wearing a Tag Heuer

The still frame from Le Mans is one of the most reproduced images in watch collecting: Steve McQueen in a Gulf-liveried race suit, the asymmetric blue dial of a Heuer Monaco ref. 1133 clearly visible on his left wrist. It is not a prop, not a stand-in — it is a genuine production ref. 1133, and the film used six of them across the shoot. That detail matters enormously to the market.

Heuer introduced the Monaco in 1969 alongside the Calibre 11, the first automatic chronograph movement developed by a consortium including Breitling, Büren, and Dubois Dépraz. The ref. 1133 houses that movement in a 39mm square stainless steel case — water-resistant to 10 metres, a genuine engineering feat for a square case at the time. The crown-left positioning was a deliberate visual statement, and the blue dial with contrasting white and red sub-registers became the most recognisable configuration. Case thickness sits at roughly 14mm, and the movement runs at 19,800 vph with a date function integrated at 3 o'clock.

For collectors, the ref. 1133 occupies a singular position. It predates the McQueen association — the watch was already a bold commercial gamble by Jack Heuer — but the film transformed it into something more durable than a trend. Among the six set-worn examples, the provenance hierarchy is everything: watches with documented continuity from the production company attract the highest premiums. One example sold in recent years set an absolute record for any Heuer at auction, displacing a previous record also held by a Le Mans Monaco.

McQueen was a genuine motorsport competitor, not merely a celebrity endorser. He raced seriously, understood machinery, and wore the Monaco because it suited the character and the context. That authenticity is what separates this sighting from product placement.

Vintage ref. 1133 examples in honest condition without McQueen provenance trade regularly in the grey market, with desirable blue-dial variants commanding significant premiums over standard examples. TAG Heuer has reissued the Monaco repeatedly, but the original Calibre 11 references remain the collector benchmark.
