Raphaël Varane was photographed off-duty wearing a Panerai Radiomir 3 Days GMT Oro Rosso, reference PAM00421 — a limited-production piece in 18k rose gold that sits firmly at the top of the Radiomir hierarchy and rarely surfaces in public on a celebrity wrist.

The PAM00421 centres on the Panerai manufacture calibre P.2003, a manually wound movement beating at 28,800 vph with three series-coupled barrels delivering a genuine 72-hour power reserve. The movement incorporates a GMT complication via an additional 24-hour hand and a bidirectional rotating bezel — a technically elegant solution that allows independent home-time correction without stopping the movement. The 47mm cushion case in 18k Oro Rosso — Panerai's designation for their warm-toned rose gold alloy — is paired with an anthracite sandwich dial, its numerals milled through the upper layer to reveal the luminous substrate beneath, a direct nod to the brand's Italian Navy heritage. Water resistance is rated to 100 metres. A Kevlar strap and a brown leather strap are supplied.

Among Panerai collectors, the Oro Rosso references occupy a distinct tier. Precious-metal Radiomirs command serious attention because Panerai limits their runs more aggressively than steel references, and the combination of an in-house movement with a GMT function in a 47mm gold case represents the convergence of everything serious Paneristi care about. The PAM00421 was discontinued, which has tightened grey-market supply considerably and kept secondary prices firm.

Varane has long been associated with considered, understated taste — consistent with the Panerai aesthetic, which eschews diamonds and ostentation in favour of raw, architectural presence. At 47mm the Radiomir is a substantial proposition on any wrist, but on an elite athlete it reads exactly as intended: purposeful rather than flashy.

At UK retail the PAM00421 was listed at approximately £15,000 at launch. In USD terms that placed the piece in the $19,000–$21,000 range depending on the exchange rate at time of purchase. On the secondary market, discontinued Oro Rosso references with in-house movements have held value well, with clean examples trading in the $16,000–$22,000 corridor depending on condition and box-and-papers status.
