Charles Leclerc, Scuderia Ferrari's lead Formula 1 driver, was spotted wearing the Richard Mille UP-01 Ferrari shortly after the watch's official announcement — making him one of the very first public figures seen with what is now the thinnest mechanical watch in recorded history. The sighting came essentially at the moment of launch, underlining just how tight the relationship between Richard Mille, Ferrari, and Leclerc personally has become over recent years.

The Richard Mille UP-01 Ferrari shatters every previous record for mechanical miniaturization. The complete watch measures 1.75mm in height — for reference, a standard credit card is 0.76mm thick. The manually wound tourbillon movement inside, caliber RM UP-01, stands at just 1.18mm and was developed over five years in close collaboration between Richard Mille's movement engineers and Ferrari's advanced composites division. The case itself is fashioned from grade 5 titanium and Carbon TPT, materials borrowed directly from motorsport engineering, and measures 39.6mm × 23.6mm in an elongated, ergonomic shape designed to hug the wrist without adding mechanical bulk.

The movement construction required an entirely new approach to watchmaking architecture. Traditional components — barrel, gear train, tourbillon cage — had to be redesigned from scratch to function within tolerances previously considered impossible for a mechanical complication. The tourbillon cage alone is thinner than a human hair in several of its structural members. Achieving reliable power reserve (approximately 45 hours) in this format demanded exotic alloys and surface treatments more common in aerospace than horology.

For collectors, the Richard Mille UP-01 Ferrari is not simply another limited edition collaboration. It represents a genuine technical landmark, the kind of piece that appears once per generation. Richard Mille produced the UP-01 in an extremely limited series, and allocation was handled almost entirely through the brand's most loyal client relationships. Leclerc's association with the piece adds a layer of provenance that the Ferrari partnership alone already provides in abundance.

On the secondary market, the Richard Mille UP-01 commands significant premiums, as expected for any record-setting Richard Mille debut. Retail pricing sits in the range of $1.84 million, and grey-market transactions where they have occurred have exceeded that figure considerably. This is horological history worn on a racing driver's wrist.
