Actor Brad Pitt spotted wearing Rolex

A black-and-white candid photograph captures Brad Pitt relaxed and wearing what is immediately recognisable as a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 16520 on his wrist — the so-called 'Zenith' Daytona, and arguably the most collector-revered stainless steel sports Rolex of the quartz-crisis recovery era.

The ref. 16520 was introduced in 1988 and represented a watershed moment for Rolex's chronograph programme. After years of relying on manual-wind Valjoux-based movements, Rolex turned to the Zenith El Primero calibre, heavily modified and regulated down from 36,000 vph to 28,800 vph, and rebranded as the Rolex calibre 4030. The result was a robust, accurate automatic chronograph housed in a 40mm oyster case — the first automatic Daytona — with a screw-down pushers system that gave it genuine water resistance to 100 metres.

It is affordable enough to wear daily relative to its Paul Newman predecessors, yet historically significant enough to appreciate consistently. The white-dial variant in clean condition commands a substantial premium over its grey-market baseline, particularly in serial ranges associated with earlier production. The 'Zenith' nickname has become shorthand among enthusiasts for a specific philosophy: mechanical integrity over marketing.
