Christopher Paul O'Neill, the American-born entrepreneur and member of the Swedish royal family by marriage, was recently photographed wearing a vintage Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 6241 in stainless steel, fitted with what collectors universally call a 'Paul Newman' exotic dial — one of the most coveted configurations in all of vintage watchmaking.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 6241 entered production around 1966, conceived as a direct evolution of the ref. 6239 that had launched the Daytona name in 1963. Mechanically and aesthetically the two references share their DNA: both house the manually-wound Valjoux 72 calibre, a robust 17-jewel movement offering a power reserve of approximately 40 hours and a beat rate of 18,000 vph. The defining difference lies in the bezel. Where the 6239 wore an engraved metal tachymetre ring, the 6241 introduced a composite construction — a stainless steel outer ring housing a press-fitted black acrylic insert printed with a white tachymetre scale. It gave the watch a sharper, more graphic profile, though the acrylic proved prone to cracking and shrinkage over decades, making pristine examples genuinely scarce today.

When the ref. 6241 carries an exotic dial — the term covering those featuring Art Deco-style sub-register surrounds, square indexes, and contrasting printed tracks — collector significance multiplies dramatically. These dials were not marketed as premium options by Rolex at the time; they were simply one dial variant among several. The market only recognised their rarity and visual distinction after Paul Newman was photographed wearing his own exotic-dial 6239, gifted by Joanne Woodward. Today the 'Paul Newman' designation applies loosely to any exotic-dial Daytona regardless of reference, though purists rightly distinguish between references.

O'Neill's connection to European aristocracy and international business circles places him squarely in the demographic that has long appreciated serious vintage Rolex collecting — understated in public profile, precise in taste.

On the current market, a ref. 6241 with a genuine exotic 'Paul Newman' dial in honest, unpolished condition commands significant sums at auction. Depending on dial condition, case sharpness, and provenance, examples have cleared $150,000 to well above $300,000 at the major auction houses. No current retail equivalent exists — this is purely a vintage proposition, and one of the most serious ones a Daytona collector can make.
