In Thunderball (1965), director Terence Young gave James Bond a suite of gadget watches, and the Breitling Top Time worn by Sean Connery is the most technically fascinating of them all. EON Productions worked with Breitling to modify the standard production case, fitting a disguised Geiger counter beneath the bezel — a rare instance of a real manufacturer's watch being physically altered for a major film production. The sighting captured here shows the watch in close-up on Connery's wrist, the bi-compax black dial and steel case unmistakeable even in the grain of mid-1960s film stock.

The Breitling Top Time reference 2002 — the most likely candidate given the bi-compax layout and period production — was driven by the Valjoux 7730, a robust Swiss hand-wound column-wheel chronograph movement with 17 jewels. The dial presents two registers: a running seconds subdial at nine o'clock and a 30-minute chronograph counter at three, arranged symmetrically on a matte black background. The aluminium tachymetre chapter ring sits inside a fixed polished steel bezel, and the tonneau-influenced case gives the Top Time a sportier silhouette than most contemporary dress chronographs.

For Breitling collectors, the Top Time occupies a curious position: produced through the 1960s and into the early 1970s across multiple references and dial configurations, it was never the company's flagship — that honour went to the Navitimer — yet the Bond connection transformed its collector ceiling entirely. Original examples in honest, unpolished condition with intact dials command significant premiums at auction, particularly those with confirmed close-to-Thunderball production dates.

Sean Connery's relationship with the watch was purely professional — Bond's gadget arsenal, not a personal choice — but the screen time the Top Time received in Thunderball's early sequences cemented its place in horological pop culture. No other Breitling reference has benefited so directly from a single film appearance.

On the secondary market, original Breitling Top Time examples in good condition trade between $3,000 and $8,000 depending on reference and dial integrity, with documented 'Thunderball-era' references pushing considerably higher at specialist auction houses. Breitling reissued the Top Time concept in 2020 with modern movements, but the originals remain the collector's target.
