The reference 5004 is one of Patek Philippe's grand complications in the truest sense. Introduced in 1996, it houses Caliber CHR 27-70Q, a manually wound movement combining a split-seconds (rattrapante) chronograph with a perpetual calendar — a pairing that demands extraordinary finishing and adjustment. The movement runs at 18,800 vph, offers a 45-hour power reserve, and displays the perpetual calendar through apertures and subdials that account for leap years through 2100. Production of the 5004 was discontinued in 2012 after roughly 15 years, making surviving examples inherently finite.

Mayer's Piece Unique departs from standard 5004 references through its black grand feu enamel dial — a labor-intensive surface fired at high temperature and notoriously difficult to produce without cracking — and the singular Roman numeral XII at 12 o'clock in place of the usual baton index. The yellow gold case and matching five-link yellow gold bracelet complete a configuration that reads as deliberately classical, even austere. Patek Philippe's special-orders department accepted a narrow set of commissions of this nature; receiving one implies a relationship with the manufacture of considerable depth.

Mayer's watch collecting is well-documented — he has spoken at length about Patek Philippe, independent makers, and the tactile pleasure of mechanical horology. That he chose to wear this particular watch to music's most-watched annual ceremony rather than keep it private signals something deliberate: this is a collector who understands the cultural weight of the wrist.

On the grey market, standard yellow gold reference 5004 examples have traded between $150,000 and $300,000 depending on configuration and condition. A black enamel dial variant already commands a meaningful premium in any metal. A documented, photographed Piece Unique with Mayer provenance exists in a category where conventional pricing frameworks simply do not apply — its value is effectively set by whoever wants it most.
