Michael Jordan doesn't wear watches to make a point — he wears them because he knows what he's looking at. The Charlotte Hornets owner was recently photographed with a first-series platinum A. Lange & Söhne Datograph on his wrist, ref. 453.135, fitted with the period-correct rice-grain platinum bracelet that Lange produced exclusively for the earliest deliveries of this reference. The piece was subsequently identified and cross-referenced against SJX's authoritative Lange Datograph guide, confirming the sighting's significance.

The Datograph debuted in 1999 and immediately redrew the boundaries of haute horlogerie chronograph design. Powered by the in-house Calibre L951.1 — a column-wheel flyback chronograph movement with a precisely jumping digital minute counter — it demonstrated that post-reunification Lange could compete with, and often surpass, anything Geneva was producing. The platinum ref. 453.135 sits at the top of the original Datograph hierarchy. Its 39mm case in 950 platinum houses the gilt three-quarter plate movement with Glashütte ribbing, blued screws, and hand-engraved balance cock, all visible through a sapphire caseback. The rice-grain bracelet variant is the rarest configuration of an already rare reference, replaced in later production by strap-only delivery.

For collectors, the first-series platinum Datograph occupies a specific and coveted position. Early Lange references from the brand's 1994 relaunch carry a historical weight that later reissues simply cannot replicate. The rice-grain bracelet — correct, intact, and on the original reference — transforms this from a great watch into a document of Lange's early ambitions. Fewer examples exist in this configuration than most collectors realise, and complete, bracelet-intact examples are extraordinarily difficult to source.

Jordan has been known to gravitate toward serious horology rather than conspicuous luxury. Owning this particular Datograph variant suggests genuine knowledge of the market and the marque, not a purchase made on brand recognition alone. It is the kind of watch a collector buys when they stop caring about what other people recognise.

On the grey market, first-series platinum Datographs with the original bracelet command a significant premium over standard examples. Retail pricing on current Datograph references from Lange provides no useful comparison — the ref. 453.135 has not been produced for years, and its market value is driven entirely by collector demand, condition, and, critically, bracelet originality.
