Who & what: Patek Philippe World Time Moonphase White Gold Reference 5575G-001 – Francesco Ragazzi

Francesco Ragazzi, the Milan-born creative director who built Palm Angels from a skateboarding photography project into a globally recognised luxury streetwear house, was recently seen wearing a Patek Philippe World Time Moonphase reference 5575G-001 — one of the most architecturally complex dials the Geneva manufacture has ever produced for a two-hand watch.

Introduced at Baselworld 2014 to celebrate Patek Philippe's 175th anniversary, the 5575G was a deliberate statement piece. For the first time in the manufacture's history, the World Time complication — originally developed in collaboration with Louis Cottier in the 1930s — was married to a moonphase display. The result required a complete redesign of the dial architecture. Where a standard World Timers like the reference 5130 feature a guilloché centre disc, the 5575G replaces that space entirely with a large, photorealistic moonphase aperture positioned beneath a hand-painted cloisonné enamel world map ring. The outer chapter ring carries all 24 city references, allowing instant reading of local time across every time zone via a single push of the corrector at 10 o'clock.

Powering the 38.5mm white gold case is the calibre 240 HU LU, a derivative of Patek Philippe's celebrated ultra-thin 240 automatic movement — itself only 2.53mm thick — augmented with the World Time module and a moonphase mechanism accurate to one day's deviation every 122 years. The movement is finished to the full array of Geneva Seal standards, with bevelled bridges, perlage, and a 22k gold micro-rotor that keeps winding discreet and balanced.

Collector appetite for the 5575G has remained strong precisely because of its singularity. It is not a regular production reference; with only 1,300 examples made, it occupies the rare territory between limited anniversary piece and definitive expression of a complication. The cloisonné enamel panels — each unique due to the hand-painting process — add an irreproducible artisanal dimension that straight complications cannot match.

Ragazzi's taste in watches has consistently tracked towards horological substance over branding. Choosing the 5575G aligns with that sensibility: it is quiet on the wrist, technically serious, and carries a cultural weight that rewards those who recognise it.
