Actor Leonardo DiCaprio spotted wearing Rolex

Somewhere in the mid-to-late 1990s, a young Leonardo DiCaprio was photographed wearing what collectors now consider one of the most significant sports watches of the twentieth century: the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 16520 in stainless steel with a black tritium dial. The sighting predates DiCaprio's current status as one of Hollywood's most scrutinized watch collectors, offering a rare glimpse at a taste that was clearly already well-formed.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 16520 entered production in 1988, succeeding the manually wound 6263 and 6265 references and representing a decisive technological leap. Rather than develop an in-house automatic chronograph movement from scratch, Rolex acquired the Zenith El Primero 400 calibre, modified it substantially — slowing the beat rate from 36,000 to 28,800 vph, replacing certain components — and designated the result the calibre 4030. The El Primero's column-wheel architecture and vertical clutch delivered chronograph performance that no rival automatic movement at the time could match. It remains one of the few instances where Rolex openly relied on an external movement architecture, which is precisely why collectors never stopped talking about it.

The ref. 16520 with a black dial — sometimes called the 'underline' or 'inverted six' depending on the specific serial — is among the most granular areas of Daytona collecting. Different production series carry subtle dial variations, bezel differences, and tritium versus luminova aging characteristics that can shift value considerably. What they all share is an acrylic crystal, a 40mm case with the clean, uncluttered aesthetic of pre-ceramic Daytona design, and that Zenith-sourced movement ticking beneath.

DiCaprio has been linked to serious watch collecting for years — Patek Philippe and vintage Rolex have both appeared on his wrist across various sightings — but this 1990s photograph is particularly telling. Acquiring a 16520 during its actual production run required either strong connections to an authorized dealer or a willingness to pay premiums that, at the time, seemed unreasonable. Evidently, DiCaprio had both the interest and the access.

On today's grey market, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 16520 trades in a wide range depending on dial variant, serial bracket, and overall condition. Unpolished examples with original dials in excellent condition regularly command figures well into five territory, with the most desirable 'inverted six' black-dial examples achieving significantly more at auction. The 16520 was never offered at a fixed retail price that reflected its true demand — and the market has been correcting that discrepancy ever since.
