About Bernard Tapie’s watch collection

Bernard Tapie was one of the most polarising figures in modern French public life. Born in Paris in 1943, he built his reputation first as a serial entrepreneur, turning around failing businesses throughout the 1970s and 1980s before moving into football ownership, politics, and media. His tenure as president of Olympique de Marseille remains the defining chapter of his sporting legacy — under his ownership, the club won four consecutive Ligue 1 titles and, in 1993, became the first and only French club to lift the UEFA Champions League. He served as Minister of Urban Affairs under Prime Minister Pierre Bérégovoy in 1992 and later ran as a candidate in various political contests, never quite shedding the controversies that followed his business dealings. He died in October 2021 after a long battle with cancer.

The Bernard Tapie watch collection, as far as public sightings go, is anchored by a single well-documented piece: a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in stainless steel, worn on an Oyster bracelet with a white dial. The reference is almost certainly the 116520, produced between 2000 and 2016 and significant for being the first Daytona to run Rolex's entirely in-house Cal. 4130 chronograph movement, built around a column wheel and vertical clutch. It was a departure from the earlier Zenith-based movements and marked Rolex's full technical independence in chronograph production. In the steel configuration with a white dial, the 116520 became one of the most sought-after references of its generation.

The choice of a steel Daytona rather than a gold or two-tone variant tells you something about Tapie's approach to visible wealth. The watch is expensive and recognisable to anyone who knows watches, but it does not announce itself to a general audience. For a man whose career constantly walked the line between populist appeal and elite access, that calibration seems entirely deliberate.
