About Andy Warhol’s watch collection

Andy Warhol was the defining pop art visionary of 20th-century American culture. As a painter, filmmaker, and cultural commentator, he shaped how the world understood art, celebrity, and mass production from the 1960s onward. His work challenged traditional boundaries between fine art and commercial design, making him one of the most influential artists of his era.

Warhol's approach to watches reflected the same deliberate contradiction that defined his art: he favored mechanical precision and heritage craftsmanship while simultaneously engaging with consumer culture. The Andy Warhol watch collection reveals a preference for established Swiss manufacturers, particularly Patek Philippe. He was spotted wearing an 18k yellow gold Patek Philippe Ref. 2503, known as the 'Spider Lugs' for its distinctive flared hooded lugs, paired with a black leather strap. He also owned a Patek Philippe 2526, another classic dress piece from the manufacturer's catalog.

Despite his private appreciation for complex Patek Philippe pieces, Warhol's public signature was the Cartier Tank in yellow gold—a rectangular dress watch he famously wore unwound, treating it more as a wearable sculpture than a functional timekeeper. Later in life, he also wore the Hublot MDM Genève Reference 1521.100.2, a yellow gold and steel sports watch that represented a different aesthetic direction. These watches demonstrate Warhol's consistent alignment with luxury Swiss horology, even as he maintained his characteristic ironic distance from conventional notions of how objects should be used.
