About Marcell Jacobs’s watch collection

Marcell Jacobs is an Italian-American sprinter and the reigning Olympic 100m champion, having crossed the finish line in Tokyo in 9.80 seconds to claim the title many consider the most prestigious in track and field. Born in El Paso, Texas, and raised in Desenzano del Garda in northern Italy, Jacobs competed for Italy throughout his career, also anchoring the Italian 4x100m relay team to gold at the same Games. He followed that historic double with a European Championship 100m title in 2022, cementing his place as the fastest man in Europe and one of the most recognisable faces in world athletics.

The Marcell Jacobs watch collection currently numbers two pieces in our database, but both signal a collector with a deliberate eye rather than someone simply accepting brand partnerships. The more striking of the two is a piece unique Purnell Escape II in yellow ceramized titanium, photographed during a relaxed outdoor shoot. Purnell is a Geneva-based independent manufacture founded by watchmaker Eric Loth, and the Escape II is built around an escapement architecture designed to run at exceptionally high frequency — a mechanical philosophy that maps neatly onto Jacobs's own profession. The yellow ceramized titanium case makes this particular example visually arresting and genuinely rare. He has also been spotted wearing Rolex, the Swiss giant that remains the default reference point for athletes crossing into serious watch territory.

What the collection reflects, even from a small sample, is a preference for pieces with a conceptual logic behind them rather than pure status signalling. The Purnell in particular is not a watch most people would recognise on the street, which suggests Jacobs or someone advising him went looking for it specifically. A sprint champion wearing a movement engineered around speed and high-frequency oscillation is either a very neat coincidence or a very considered choice.
