Paolo di Canio is one of the most compelling and combustible figures Italian football has produced. Born in Rome in 1968, he came through the Lazio academy before going on to play for clubs including Juventus, AC Milan, Celtic, Sheffield Wednesday, and West Ham United. It was at Sheffield Wednesday and later Sunderland where he became a genuine cult figure in English football, combining technical brilliance with a theatrical intensity that made him impossible to ignore. His playing career yielded over 300 club appearances and a spell in the Italian national setup, and he later moved into management, most notably taking Swindon Town from League Two to the Championship before a headline-grabbing stint in charge of Sunderland. On and off the pitch, di Canio has always done things his own way.

The Paolo di Canio watch collection, as far as our records show, centres on a single documented sighting — but it is a significant one. An archival photograph from his Sheffield Wednesday years shows di Canio wearing a stainless steel Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 6265 with a so-called Paul Newman panda dial. The ref. 6265 was produced from 1971 into the early 1980s and represents one of the most sought-after references in the vintage Rolex catalogue. Paul Newman dials — named after the actor who made them famous — feature a distinctive exotic sub-dial design that commands enormous premiums in today's market.

What makes this sighting particularly interesting is its timing. The photograph predates the period when Paul Newman Daytonas became widely understood as collectible objects. Di Canio was almost certainly wearing it because he genuinely liked the watch, not because he had one eye on the auction market. That kind of unselfconscious ownership — picking up something rare before the world caught on — says more about instinct than it does about investment strategy, and it fits the man's broader reputation for doing things on his own terms.
