About Qaboos bin Said’s watch collection

Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said ruled the Sultanate of Oman from 1970 until his death in January 2020, a reign of nearly fifty years that transformed the country from a largely isolated, underdeveloped state into a modern nation with functioning infrastructure, healthcare, and educational institutions. He was the longest-serving ruler in the modern Arab world and pursued a foreign policy of careful neutrality that earned Oman a reputation as a quiet diplomatic back-channel between powers that otherwise refused to speak directly. Educated at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England, he combined a formal Western education with a deep engagement in Omani culture, classical Arabic music, and the traditions of the Gulf. He remains a significant figure in twentieth-century regional history.

The Qaboos bin Said watch collection, as documented through photographs and royal sightings, reflects a man who wore watches with purpose rather than for display. The centrepiece of what has been spotted is a Patek Philippe Nautilus reference 3700/1 — the original Gérard Genta-designed sports watch first shown at the Basel Fair in 1976. What separates this particular example from any standard ref. 3700/1 is its dial: it has been customized to feature the national emblem of the Sultanate of Oman, specifically the crossed swords and khanjar dagger that appear on the Omani flag. Patek Philippe has a long history of producing bespoke and diplomatically significant pieces for heads of state, and this watch places Sultan Qaboos firmly within that tradition.

A customized Nautilus ref. 3700/1 of this kind occupies a category well beyond standard collector territory. The ref. 3700/1 is already one of the more sought-after references in vintage Patek Philippe collecting, given its status as the original Nautilus production reference. The addition of a sovereign national emblem on the dial elevates it into the realm of horological and historical artifact simultaneously — the kind of object that documents a moment in political history as much as it tells the time. Whether this was a personal commission or a diplomatic gift is not publicly confirmed, but either context adds considerable significance to an already rare watch.
