Éric Tabarly was a French naval officer and ocean racing sailor whose name became synonymous with offshore competition in the second half of the twentieth century. Born in 1931 in Nantes, he rose to international prominence when he won the 1964 OSTAR — the Observer Single-handed Transatlantic Race — aboard his ketch Pen Duick II, defeating a far larger fleet and triggering a wave of national pride in France that turned sailing into a mainstream sport overnight. He won the race again in 1976, competed in multiple Whitbread Round the World Races, and set a transatlantic speed record aboard the trimaran Paul Ricard in 1980. He was lost at sea in 1998, sailing in the Irish Sea aboard Pen Duick, the wooden gaff cutter he had restored as a young man. He remains, to this day, the most celebrated figure in the history of French offshore sailing.
