Introduction to Giovanna Amati

Giovanna Amati is an Italian racing driver and pilot who made history as one of the few women to compete at the highest level of single-seater motorsport. Born in Rome in 1962, she built her career through Formula 3000 and various European championships before securing a seat with the Brabham Formula 1 team for the 1992 season. She attempted to qualify for three Grands Prix — South Africa, Mexico and Brazil — behind the wheel of the Brabham BT60B, a car widely regarded as uncompetitive even by the standards of the mid-grid teams of that era. Though she did not make the race grid, her presence in F1 remains significant: she was the last woman to attempt to qualify for a Formula 1 Grand Prix for over three decades, until others followed in testing and development roles. Away from F1, Amati is also a licensed pilot, adding another dimension to a life built around speed and precision.

The Giovanna Amati watch collection, as documented in our database, currently contains one confirmed sighting: the Swatch Chrono Neon, photographed on her wrist in the Brabham garage during the 1992 season. The image shows Amati in race suit, arms crossed, the bright Swatch sitting squarely on her wrist — a deliberate or at least telling choice given the paddock environment of the time. The early 1990s Formula 1 paddock was saturated with TAG Heuer and Longines branding, both official partners of various teams and series. Wearing a Swatch rather than a prestige Swiss chronograph aligned with no sponsorship obligation and no paddock politics.

What that single Swatch Chrono Neon communicates is straightforwardness. The Chrono Neon was a bold, plastic-cased, affordable chronograph from Swatch's early 1990s lineup — functional, colourful and entirely uninterested in traditional watch hierarchy. For a driver navigating an unwelcoming environment largely on her own terms, the choice fits. It is a small but concrete detail that adds texture to an already compelling motorsport story.

The Swatch Chrono Neon series — produced between 1991 and 1993 — introduced plastic chronograph movements to a mass audience at a price point that made Swiss timing genuinely democratic. The fluorescent yellow jelly case, navy-and-orange bi-colour dial and colour-matched sub-registers are unmistakably early-'90s Swatch Chrono DNA. Giovanna Amati, the last woman to compete in a Formula 1 World Championship, was photographed wearing one trackside — a quietly perfect pairing of motorsport history and pop horological culture.
