Footballer Samuel Eto'o spotted wearing Rolex

Samuel Eto'o, one of the most decorated African footballers of all time and current president of the Cameroonian Football Federation, was recently spotted wearing a stainless steel Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 16520 featuring the famed 'Patrizzi' dial — a watch that sits at the intersection of collector obsession and industrial accident.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 16520 was produced between 1988 and 2000, representing the first Daytona to house an automatic movement — the Zenith El Primero-based calibre 4030, which Rolex significantly modified and regulated to its own exacting standards. The watch measures 40mm in stainless steel with a tachymeter bezel and, in this case, a white-register dial that has since oxidised to the warm, tobacco-toned subdials that define the Patrizzi variant. The phenomenon is attributed to faulty application of protective varnish over the subsidiary dials, a defect more commonly observed on W, S, and T serial references, though technically possible across the entire production run.

The 'Patrizzi' designation honours Osvaldo Patrizzi, the former chairman of Antiquorum auction house, who actively championed these oxidised examples at a time when many still considered them simply faulty watches. His advocacy reframed the conversation entirely. Today, a confirmed Patrizzi dial on a ref. 16520 commands a substantial premium over its standard white-register counterpart — the patina is irreproducible, meaning no two dials age identically, and authenticity scrutiny is intense.

Eto'o, a four-time African Player of the Year and Champions League winner with Barcelona and Inter Milan, has long demonstrated a refined taste in high-end horology. Pairing an investment-grade vintage Rolex with proven sporting pedigree feels entirely consistent with his personal brand.

On the current grey market, clean Patrizzi examples in strong condition regularly trade well above six figures. The ref. 16520 Patrizzi remains one of the most liquid and universally respected vintage Rolex references a collector can hold — proof that in watches, as in football, the best careers only appreciate with time.
