George Daniels: The Renowned Watchmaker and His Innovations

George Daniels is a name that is synonymous with watchmaking excellence. Born in 1926, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest watchmakers of the 20th century. Daniels's innovative creations have continued to inspire watchmakers long after his death in 2011.

Daniels built complete watches by hand, from his workshop on the Isle of Man, at a rate of around one watch per year. This painstaking process may seem slow, but Daniels believed in taking his time to produce works of art that would last for generations.

One of Daniels's greatest inventions is the co-axial escapement, which reduces the friction within the movement of the watch. This technology drastically improves efficiency and durability. Patek Philippe recognized the genius behind this invention and requested that Daniels modify their Nautilus ref. 3800 with it. This marked the creation of the first wristwatch ever to feature the co-axial escapement.

The London Science Museum currently houses the Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 3800 modified by Daniels. This watch is a testament to his skill as a master watchmaker, and to his contributions to the field of horology.

George Daniels's legacy lives on through the generations of watchmakers who continue to look up to his work. His dedication to the craft serves as an inspiration for those striving to create timeless works of art.
