An archive photograph of George Daniels wearing a Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 3800 is, on the surface, an image of one of horology's greatest minds wearing a well-regarded Swiss sports watch. Look closer and it is something far rarer: the only known wristwatch ever fitted with Daniels' co-axial escapement during his own lifetime, built at Patek Philippe's direct request.

The Nautilus ref. 3800 was introduced in 1981 as a slightly reduced alternative to Gerald Genta's original ref. 3700, which had launched in 1976 and quickly defined the integrated-bracelet luxury sports watch category. Where the 3700 measured 42 mm across its distinctive porthole-shaped case, the 3800 brought that footprint down to a more wearable 37.5 mm. It was powered by the calibre 335 SC, a self-winding movement with a 40-hour power reserve, housed in stainless steel with the genre's signature horizontally brushed and polished alternating surfaces. Production ran until 2006, making it one of the longer-lived references in the Nautilus family.

Daniels had invented the co-axial escapement in 1974 as a solution to a fundamental problem in mechanical watchmaking: the sliding friction inherent in the Swiss lever escapement, which demands frequent lubrication and accelerates wear. His co-axial design replaced sliding contact with an impulse transmitted on an orthogonal axis, dramatically reducing friction and theoretical service intervals. Despite its elegance, the Swiss industry largely ignored him — until Omega licensed the concept in 1999. That Patek Philippe invited Daniels to transplant his escapement into a production-case Nautilus 3800 represents a remarkable, if quietly conducted, moment of institutional acknowledgment.

Daniels himself worked from a one-man workshop on the Isle of Man, producing approximately one complete watch per year, hand-finishing every component. His Daniels Space Traveller and Anniversary Watch are among the most studied pieces in independent watchmaking. That such a figure chose to wear this modified Nautilus — rather than one of his own creations — speaks to the esteem in which he held the exercise.

The Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 3800 trades today on the grey market in the $15,000–$30,000 range depending on condition, dial variant, and bracelet completeness. This specific example, as a documented prototype housing the co-axial escapement and directly linked to Daniels, occupies a category entirely beyond standard valuation.
