Footballer Cristiano Ronaldo spotted wearing Franck Muller

At the Globe Soccer Awards ceremony held in Dubai, Cristiano Ronaldo accepted the Player of the Century accolade with a watch on his wrist that arguably outranked every trophy in the room. Introduced in the early 1990s, its three-dimensionally curved tonneau case solved a genuine ergonomic challenge — conforming to the wrist's natural curvature — while simultaneously creating a canvas unlike anything in Swiss watchmaking. On this pièce unique, that canvas is exploited to its absolute limit. Every surface — bezel, case flanks, dial, bracelet links — is saturated with baguette diamonds arranged in concentric radiating rows. Sertissage invisible involves cutting each stone with a groove on its underside and sliding it onto a gold rail system so that no metal is visible from above; the diamonds lock together like a crystalline mosaic. Achieving this on a curved three-dimensional surface elevates the difficulty to near-impossible levels.

At the centre of the dial, a flying tourbillon carriage — visible through the diamond field — rotates on its one-minute axis, the gold finishing of the cage offering the only warm contrast to the cold blaze of the stones. The movement is a manually wound Franck Muller calibre, decorated to Genevan standards beneath a display that few owners will ever examine at that level of detail.

From a collector's standpoint, pièces uniques of this category occupy a stratum entirely separate from production references. They are negotiated directly with the Franck Muller atelier in Genthod, Geneva, priced by stone count, setting complexity, and movement specification — and they never appear at retail. The £1.2 million sterling figure associated with this piece reflects the estimated cost of the diamond work alone, before movement and labour are factored.
