Tennis player Rafael Nadal spotted wearing Richard Mille

Rafael Nadal was spotted on court — where else — wearing the Richard Mille RM27-01 Tourbillon, the watch that was essentially engineered around his serve. The sighting is entirely unremarkable in one sense: Nadal has rarely competed without a Richard Mille since the partnership began in 2010. In every other sense, however, the watch on his wrist represents one of the most technically audacious objects ever produced by a Swiss manufacture.

The Richard Mille RM27-01 debuted in 2013 as a direct evolution of the RM027, itself already a landmark in ultra-light construction. The case is fabricated from grade 5 titanium and NTPT carbon, a layered filament composite developed for Formula 1 bodywork, producing a total case weight of just 19.84 grams — tourbillon movement included. The manual-winding caliber RM27-01 features a tourbillon cage suspended by a single titanium cable tensioned to 30 kilograms, a construction borrowed from bridge engineering. The movement is rated to survive shocks of 5,000 Gs, validated by real-world testing: Nadal wore it through Roland Garros victories, clay dust and all.

For collectors, the RM27-01 occupies a singular position. Richard Mille produced only 50 examples, each individually delivered to clients at the sharp end of the brand's waiting list. The combination of a hand-wound tourbillon, sub-20-gram weight, and a legitimately sport-proven provenance is without parallel in contemporary watchmaking. No other tourbillon of comparable complication has been stress-tested at Grand Slam level.

Nadal's relationship with Richard Mille extends beyond marketing. The Mallorcan has worn successive RM models — RM027, RM27-01, RM27-02, RM27-03 — through 14 French Open titles and counting, giving each reference a degree of athletic authentication that money cannot otherwise purchase. The watch is as much a part of his competitive identity as his sleeveless shirts.

On the secondary market, the RM27-01 commands significant premiums over its already stratospheric retail price. With only 50 examples in existence and near-zero seller motivation among owners, grey-market transactions are rare and price discovery is imprecise. Expect confirmed private sales to land well above the £424,000 UK list equivalent, reflecting both scarcity and the enduring cult of the Nadal–Richard Mille axis.
