Politician Jean Todt spotted wearing Richard Mille

Jean Todt, former President of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile and the architect of Michael Schumacher's five consecutive Formula 1 championship dynasty at Ferrari, was spotted at an F1 event wearing one of the most technically audacious wristwatches ever constructed: the Richard Mille RM56-01 Tourbillon Sapphire.

The RM56-01 represents a genuine engineering landmark. Its case — tonneau-shaped and measuring approximately 50mm × 42.7mm × 20mm — is machined entirely from blocks of synthetic corundum, the same material as sapphire gemstones, registering 9 on the Mohs hardness scale. Each case demands over 1,000 hours of precision machining and polishing, a process so demanding that Richard Mille limited production to just five pieces worldwide. The movement is suspended within the case by a system of nano-filament cables just 0.35mm in diameter, a solution that isolates the calibre from shock and allows 360-degree visual access to the mechanism from virtually any angle.

The manually wound calibre RMSP3 tourbillon beats at 21,600 vph and offers approximately 45 hours of power reserve. Functions are deliberately minimal — hours, minutes, tourbillon — letting the movement perform as the unobstructed visual centrepiece. The combination of the transparent sapphire architecture and the floating movement suspension system represents the most technically complex execution of Richard Mille's long-standing philosophy of aerospace-grade materials applied to haute horlogerie.

Todt's connection to this watch is culturally coherent. Richard Mille has been a fixture in Formula 1 paddocks for over two decades, sponsoring teams and cultivating relationships with drivers and officials alike. For Todt — a man who spent his career at the intersection of precision engineering and competitive motorsport — the RM56-01 is less a fashion statement than a professional signal.

With a UK list price of approximately £1.6 million and production capped at five units, the RM56-01 effectively has no functioning secondary market in any conventional sense. Private treaty transactions, when they occur at all, are believed to command significant premiums over original retail. This is a watch that does not surface at auction — it circulates quietly among a handful of collectors globally, making Todt's wrist sighting one of the rarest watch-spotting moments the F1 calendar is likely to produce.
