The photograph was taken at a Jacob & Co event — the brand's logo is clearly visible in the background — where J Balvin unveiled what is arguably the most personalised piece the New York-based manufacture has produced for an individual client to date. The watch on his wrist is a one-of-one Astronomia Tourbillon Baguette Piece Unique, built around the artist's own aesthetic brief: saturated colour, maximum spectacle, unmistakable identity.

At the core of the Jacob & Co Astronomia Tourbillon sits the brand's in-house JCAM09 hand-wound movement, a four-arm rotating carrousel that completes one full revolution every 10 minutes. Each arm carries a distinct complication: a triple-axis tourbillon, a 288-facet Jacob-cut diamond sphere, a rotating magnesium globe, and a time-display subdial with blued hands. The entire mechanism floats behind a sapphire crystal without a traditional dial substrate, meaning the movement IS the dial. In this Piece Unique, Jacob & Co replaced the movement's standard decorative elements with 133 individually set triangle-cut sapphires in red, green, yellow, and blue, totalling 7.83 carats — a chromatic arrangement that recalls a rose window in motion. The case is 47mm white gold set with baguette-cut diamonds on the lugs and bezel flanks, riding a blue alligator strap that ties the palette together.

The Astronomia platform, introduced in 2014, redefined what an independent manufacture could deliver in terms of visual drama. Its collector reputation is split: purists debate whether the piece leans toward jewellery or horology, but the technical execution of the triple-axis tourbillon is beyond reproach. Piece Unique commissions on this base have been produced for a short list of clients, each requiring months of dialogue with Jacob & Co's atelier.

J Balvin has a documented, long-standing relationship with Jacob & Co, having previously worn standard Astronomia references and co-developed collab editions. This Piece Unique, however, represents a different tier: a fully custom commission reportedly priced at approximately one million USD, conceived as a wearable extension of his visual brand — vivid, symmetrical, globally referenced.

On the secondary market, standard Astronomia Tourbillon Baguette references trade well above retail, and one-of-one commissions of this complexity do not change hands through normal channels. If this piece were ever to surface at auction, estimates would almost certainly open above the original commission price, given the provenance, the gemstone specification, and the artist's global profile.
