A recent sighting confirms the guitarist wearing what may be the single most exclusive wristwatch in private hands: the Patek Philippe Reference 2499/100 in platinum, a piece so singular that its very existence was largely the preserve of specialist auction literature and Geneva insiders until it surfaced publicly.

The Patek Philippe Reference 2499 was produced from 1950 to 1985, serving as the direct successor to the legendary Ref. 1518 — the world's first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph. Over its 35-year run, Patek manufactured approximately 349 examples of the 2499, the overwhelming majority cased in yellow or pink gold, with a small number in white gold. Platinum production was effectively non-existent: just two pieces carry the 2499/100 designation, the suffix denoting the platinum case. One resides permanently in the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva. The other is on Clapton's wrist.

Mechanically, the 2499 houses the manually wound Calibre 13 130 Q, a movement of exceptional finishing pedigree, offering a column-wheel-controlled chronograph, perpetual calendar with instantaneous date and month jumping, moon phase display, and leap year indication. The dial architecture evolved across four distinct series during the reference's production life, each variation now catalogued and debated with the intensity of fine-art scholarship among collectors.

Clapton's relationship with Patek Philippe is well documented — he has consigned important pieces through major auction houses over the years — but the 2499/100 stands apart from anything else in his known collection. Owning the only privately held platinum example of one of horology's most consequential references is not a statement of wealth so much as a statement of access: this is a watch that money alone cannot reliably acquire.

With a UK retail price quoted at approximately £2,300,000 and a US equivalent near $3,600,000, the Patek Philippe Ref. 2499/100 occupies a market position that defies conventional grey-market pricing structures. There is, in practical terms, no grey market for a two-of-a-kind watch. If it were ever to appear at auction, estimates would be academic — the hammer price would be determined entirely by the room.
