Kevin Magnussen was recently spotted wearing the Bell & Ross BR-X1, the avant-garde skeleton tourbillon that the Danish Formula 1 driver co-developed with the French watchmaker — a collaboration that goes well beyond a typical ambassador arrangement and into genuine co-authorship.

The BR-X1 sits at the apex of Bell & Ross's technical ambitions. Built around a manual-winding skeleton movement beating at 21,600 vph and featuring a flying tourbillon, the watch is encased in a 45mm square case constructed from carbon composite reinforced with a grade 5 titanium frame. The open-worked dial exposes the architecture of the caliber entirely, with the tourbillon cage positioned prominently at six o'clock. Water resistance is rated to 100 metres — serious for a dress-level complication — and the case draws its geometry directly from the cockpit instrument panels that have defined Bell & Ross's design language since the mid-1990s.

The BR-X1 was first introduced in skeleton tourbillon form around 2014 and has since evolved through several iterations, including chronograph variants. The line represents Bell & Ross stepping decisively into the high-complication space, competing in a segment where movement credibility is everything. The in-house skeletonization is executed cleanly, avoiding the overcrowded aesthetic that afflicts many openworked pieces at this price tier.

From a collector standpoint, the Magnussen co-design edition carries an additional layer of provenance. Pieces developed with active athletes who have a traceable engineering input — rather than purely a marketing role — hold narrative value that translates to long-term desirability. At retail, the BR-X1 Skeleton Tourbillon positions Bell & Ross firmly in five-figure territory, and grey-market values have held relatively stable given the limited production nature of the line. For a brand sometimes pigeonholed as a mid-market tool-watch maker, the BR-X1 series — and this sighting — serves as a clear reminder of how far the Maison has extended its technical reach.
