Dial variations — including the 'Great White,' the 'Mk1 through Mk4' matte dials, and the later gloss dials — drive significant price differentiation in the current market. Condition of the case, bracelet stretch, and originality of the bezel insert are the principal grading criteria.

De Niro was at the height of his critical powers during The Deer Hunter's production — the film followed Taxi Driver and preceded Raging Bull. His method-driven approach to character extended to wardrobe and personal effects, and the 1665 fits the working-class realism of the film's world with a precision that feels deliberate rather than accidental.

On the current grey market, honest examples of the Rolex Sea-Dweller ref. 1665 with correct dials and unpolished cases trade between $18,000 and $35,000 depending on configuration and provenance. The 'Great White' dial commands a premium. There is no current retail equivalent — the reference was discontinued over four decades ago — but its cultural footprint, reinforced by on-screen appearances like De Niro's, keeps collector demand steady.
