In Luc Besson's 2013 film 'The Family,' Robert De Niro plays Giovanni Manzoni, a relocated American mobster hiding in Normandy under witness protection. The production's costume department made a quietly excellent horological decision, placing a vintage Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox on De Niro's wrist — a watch that reads as understated old money, precisely the image a man trying not to draw attention would cultivate.

The Memovox visible on screen presents a classic late 1950s to early 1960s silhouette: a round stainless steel case of approximately 36mm, a silver two-tone sunburst dial with applied baton indices, a date window at 3 o'clock, and what appears to be a dark brown leather strap. The bezel is plain and polished, consistent with references from the E869 or early E870 family. The crown configuration — with a secondary crown at 2 o'clock for the alarm setting — is a signature Memovox detail, though it is partially obscured in the frame.

Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced the Memovox in 1950 powered by the manual-wind Calibre 489. The reference visible here, with its date complication, aligns more closely with the E869 series produced between approximately 1959 and 1965 — a period when JLC refined the case proportions and added the date to broaden the model's daily-wear appeal.

Among vintage JLC collectors, the Memovox occupies a specific and respected niche. It is not the flashiest trophy watch, but its horological significance — the alarm complication, the integrated automatic movement — rewards the knowledgeable buyer. Good examples in stainless steel with original dials trade consistently in the $3,000–$8,000 range at auction, depending on condition and dial originality.

De Niro's character is a man of cultivated tastes hiding behind a suburban facade. A vintage Memovox — functional, European, quietly authoritative — is exactly the watch such a character would wear. It speaks without shouting, which, on a mob boss trying to disappear, is the whole point.
