At the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on October 17, 2022, Karim Benzema collected the Ballon d'Or — the pinnacle of individual football recognition — following his instrumental role in Real Madrid's Champions League and La Liga double. Alongside the gilded sphere awarded by France Football, Purnell CEO Maurizio Mazzocchi personally presented Benzema with something arguably more exclusive: a one-of-a-kind timepiece created expressly for the occasion.

The Purnell Ballon d'Or watch is built around the manufacture's signature Spherion movement architecture. The case is crafted from titanium with ceramic inserts and fitted with a white rubber strap textured to reference the hexagonal panels of a football. The skeletonised dial lays bare the full movement architecture — bridges, gears, and jewels in rose gold — but the centrepiece is unmistakable: suspended at 6 o'clock beneath the movement, a hand-engraved and hand-polished 18K rose gold football houses a 30-second tourbillon. This rotation period — twice the speed of a conventional 60-second tourbillon — is Purnell's technical signature and requires substantially tighter tolerances in cage engineering.

Purnell was established in Geneva with a singular focus: pushing tourbillon mechanics to their kinetic limits. Their Escape II collection, featuring the same 30-second Spherion tourbillon, retails above $100,000, contextualising the watchmaking value embedded in this commission. The football motif is not a cosmetic flourish but a functional cage housing the complication — the engraving and polishing of the spherical tourbillon carriage alone represents dozens of hours of hand finishing by a single artisan.

For Benzema, the gesture carries layered symbolism. The player had been excluded from the French national team for years and played this defining 2021-22 season entirely in Real Madrid colours. Receiving a watch that is, by definition, not available to any collector in the world mirrors the singularity of his achievement.

As a market asset, this piece defies conventional valuation — it was never offered for sale and will never enter grey-market circulation in the traditional sense. Its closest Purnell relatives, the open-edition Spherion models, trade between $80,000 and $130,000 depending on configuration. The Ballon d'Or edition, however, belongs to a category of one.
