Few objects concentrate history quite like a wristwatch worn by a fallen emperor. The Patek Philippe Reference 96 that belonged to Aisin-Gioro Puyi — the last sovereign of the Qing Dynasty and, by extension, the last Emperor of China — represents an intersection of two great traditions of refinement: the imperial court of the Forbidden City and the ateliers of the Rue du Rhône in Geneva.

The Reference 96, launched by Patek Philippe in 1932, was the watch that effectively codified what a luxury dress watch should look like. Designed under the creative direction that would culminate in the Calatrava cross trademark, the ref. 96 featured a clean, round case — typically rendered in yellow gold — a lean profile, and a restrained dial with applied baton or Breguet-style numerals. Its movement, a manually wound calibre based on the ébauche supplied by Lémania, was regulated to exceptional standards befitting Patek Philippe's reputation. The reference remained in production for decades, evolving subtly, and is widely credited as the template for the Calatrava line that continues today.

For collectors, a Reference 96 in unmodified condition is already a serious acquisition. The model anchors the origins of Patek Philippe's most celebrated family, and early examples — particularly those in yellow gold with original dials and untouched cases — command respectful attention at auction. Provenance, when it can be verified, elevates any vintage Patek significantly. Royal or imperial ownership represents the apex of that hierarchy.

Puyi's biography is one of the twentieth century's most extraordinary. Enthroned at age two in 1908, deposed in 1912 following the Xinhai Revolution, briefly restored, and later installed by Japan as puppet ruler of Manchukuo, he ultimately lived his final years as an ordinary Chinese citizen under the Communist government, working as a gardener and later a researcher. That he possessed a Patek Philippe Reference 96 speaks to his exposure to Western luxury culture during his years in Tianjin and his time under Japanese sponsorship.

At auction, a Reference 96 with documented imperial Chinese provenance would represent a singular event in the market. Standard examples in good condition trade in the range of tens of thousands of dollars; a piece with verified Puyi ownership enters a category where historical significance, not movement grade or case condition, sets the ceiling — and that ceiling is effectively open.
