Thierry Henry, the French football icon whose name is synonymous with technical brilliance at Arsenal, Barcelona, and the French national team, was recently spotted wearing a Rolex Daytona reference 116520 in stainless steel with a white dial — a choice that speaks to understated, informed taste rather than conspicuous luxury.

The Rolex Daytona ref. 116520 was introduced at Baselworld 2000 and represented a pivotal moment for the Daytona line. It was the first reference to house Rolex's own Calibre 4130, a column-wheel chronograph movement developed entirely in-house, replacing the heavily modified Zenith El Primero that had powered the preceding ref. 16520. The Calibre 4130 features a vertical clutch mechanism, offering a cleaner start-stop action and a more reliable reset, and operates at 28,800 vph with a 72-hour power reserve. The 40mm oyster case in 904L stainless steel, tachymetric bezel, and sapphire crystal cerachrom would later evolve — but the 116520 established the template.

The white dial variant, sometimes referred to as the 'inverted panda' for its black sub-registers on a white ground, is among the most sought-after executions of the reference. Produced continuously until 2016 when the 116520 was replaced by the ref. 116500LN — which introduced a ceramic bezel — the steel white-dial example occupies a sweet spot in the collector market: recent enough to be in excellent condition, old enough to carry genuine historical weight.

Henry's affinity for a steel Daytona is fitting. The watch has long been the sports world's chronograph of choice, practical and precise enough to justify on technical merit, iconic enough to reward the attention it inevitably draws. Henry, who built a reputation for elegance on the pitch and has maintained a measured public profile since retiring, is not a maximalist dresser — a ref. 116520 aligns perfectly with that sensibility.

On the secondary market, the steel Rolex Daytona 116520 with white dial commands a significant premium over its original retail price of approximately $11,550 USD. Grey-market values have settled in the $18,000–$22,000 range depending on condition, box, and papers, with full-set examples in excellent condition pushing toward the upper end of that bracket.
