Athlete Wayde Van Niekerk spotted wearing a Richard Mille

Wayde Van Niekerk, the South African sprinter who shattered Michael Johnson's 17-year-old 400-metre world record at the 2016 Rio Olympics, was recently photographed wearing one of the most deliberately outrageous timepieces Richard Mille has ever produced: the RM 69 Erotic Tourbillon, a watch limited to just 30 pieces globally.
The RM 69 is built around a manually wound tourbillon movement, calibre RM69, that conceals a retrograde erotic automaton complication. By activating a push-piece at 9 o'clock, the wearer triggers a series of rotating discs that display explicit phrases — a mechanism Richard Mille describes as a 'wish complication.' The baseplate and bridges are machined from grade 5 titanium, while the case itself is rendered in white gold with a tonneau form measuring approximately 50mm × 42.7mm. Running at 21,600 vph with a 48-hour power reserve, the movement is finished to the same exacting standard as any serious haute horlogerie piece, tourbillon cage and all — the erotic theatre is, mechanically speaking, entirely secondary to the underlying craft.
From a collector standpoint, the RM 69 occupies a unique and somewhat uncomfortable niche. It is not a watch Richard Mille produced to demonstrate technical supremacy — the brand has far more athletically credentialed references for that — but rather a statement piece that tests how far an ultra-high-net-worth clientele will follow a brand into conceptual territory. With only 30 examples made, secondary-market appearances are genuinely rare, and when they do surface, they command prices well in excess of the already extraordinary list price of approximately £570,000 in the UK.
Van Niekerk has been a Richard Mille ambassador since before his record-breaking run, famously wearing an RM 27-02 Rafael Nadal Tourbillon on his wrist at Rio — a watch rated to withstand 10,000g of force. The RM 69 represents a very different side of the relationship: less performance engineering, more personal expression. It signals that Van Niekerk's engagement with the brand extends well beyond contractual obligation.
On the grey market, the RM 69 Erotic Tourbillon rarely trades publicly, but informed estimates place current transaction values north of $800,000 USD, reflecting both its extreme scarcity and the sustained global demand for Richard Mille's most limited references. For a watch that began as a provocation, the market has responded with complete seriousness.
