About Pablo Picasso’s watch collection

Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and printmaker who fundamentally reshaped modern art across the 20th century. Co-founder of the Cubist movement, Picasso worked across multiple styles and mediums throughout his prolific career, earning recognition as one of the most influential artists of his era. His creative output extended beyond fine art into design, ceramics, and sculpture, establishing him as a cultural figure whose impact transcended the visual arts.

The Pablo Picasso watch collection reflects a taste for precision engineering paired with refined craftsmanship. Photographed in Cannes in 1960, Picasso wore a stainless steel Rolex GMT-Master ref. 6542 with gilt dial and red/blue bezel—a sports watch that balanced functional innovation with wearable design. The ref. 6542 housed Rolex's Caliber 156 and represented the company's entry into dual-time functionality, originally developed for Pan Am pilots in 1955.

Beyond the GMT-Master, Picasso's collection included a Patek Philippe ref. 2497, a 37mm perpetual calendar moonphase in 18k yellow gold with silver dial—among the most complex wristwatches of its era. A custom yellow gold hand-wound dress watch with a personalized dial spelling 'PABLO PICASSO' demonstrated his willingness to commission bespoke pieces. A Jaeger-LeCoultre E474 triple calendar moonphase in rose gold completed his known timepiece portfolio, combining technical sophistication with precious metal construction. His selections prioritized mechanical complexity and materials over sporadic fashion, aligning with his broader approach to craftsmanship.
