Who & what: Rolex Submariner Date Stainless Steel Reference 116610LN – Steve Carell in The Big Short (2015)

In Adam McKay's 2015 financial crisis drama The Big Short, costume choices are never casual. Steve Carell's character Mark Baum — a thinly veiled portrait of hedge fund manager Steve Eisman — is seen throughout the film wearing a stainless steel Rolex Submariner Date on an Oyster bracelet, reference 116610LN. For a character defined by controlled rage and contrarian instinct, the watch reads as entirely credible: the Submariner is the kind of timepiece a Wall Street insider would wear precisely because it requires no explanation.

The 116610LN was introduced by Rolex in 2010 as the successor to the long-running 16610, bringing a raft of meaningful upgrades. The case grew from 40mm to 41mm, the Oyster bracelet gained a redesigned Glidelock clasp for micro-adjustment, and the ceramic Cerachrom bezel — black, here — replaced the aluminum insert of the previous generation. Water resistance remained at 300 metres. At its heart sits the Calibre 3135, a self-winding movement with a bi-directional rotor, Parachrom hairspring, and a 48-hour power reserve. Chronometer-certified by COSC, the 3135 is widely regarded as one of the most dependable Swiss movements ever produced.

From a collector standpoint, the 116610LN occupies a central position in the modern Rolex canon. Its combination of versatility, legibility, and mechanical solidity makes it the entry point for serious collectors and a benchmark against which competitors are routinely measured. The reference remained in production until 2020, when it was superseded by the 126610LN with Calibre 3235. First-generation 116610LN examples with earlier serial numbers are already attracting collector premiums.

Casting the Submariner on Baum is a sharp piece of character work. Eisman, the real-world inspiration, is known for blunt, unfiltered opinions — a personality at odds with ostentatious luxury. The Submariner, expensive but understated, aggressive in design but restrained in display, mirrors that tension precisely.

On the secondary market, the 116610LN currently trades at approximately $15,000, a figure that represents a meaningful premium over its original retail price and underscores continued grey-market demand. For a reference officially discontinued in 2020, that resilience speaks to its enduring collector credibility.
