Qais Al Khonji, the Omani entrepreneur and founder of Qais United Enterprises Trading and Genesis International, was recently spotted wearing one of the most iconic timepieces in horological history: the Rolex Submariner Oyster Perpetual reference 116610LN in stainless steel with a black dial and matching black Cerachrom bezel.

The ref. 116610LN entered production in 2010 as the direct successor to the long-running ref. 16610, and its most consequential upgrade was the introduction of a black ceramic Cerachrom bezel insert — scratch-resistant, UV-fade-proof, and precisely engraved with a 60-minute diving scale filled with platinum-deposited numerals. The case measures 40mm in Rolex's proprietary 904L Oystersteel, paired with an Oyster bracelet featuring the Glidelock extension system for diver's suit wear. Water resistance stands at 300 metres.

At its heart sits the Rolex caliber 3135, a self-winding movement that has been the backbone of the Submariner line for decades. Beating at 28,800 vph and offering approximately 48 hours of power reserve, the 3135 is COSC-certified as a chronometer and widely regarded as one of the most reliable and serviceably robust movements in Swiss watchmaking. The 116610LN remained in production until 2020, when Rolex retired it in favor of the slightly enlarged 41mm ref. 126610LN.

Among collectors, the 116610LN occupies a sweet spot: it carries the prestige of the Cerachrom era while retaining the classic 40mm proportions that many enthusiasts prefer over the current generation. Pre-owned examples in excellent condition have held grey-market values firmly above retail, and the reference enjoys a loyal following among those who consider the 40mm case the Submariner's ideal proportion.
