Musician Keith Richards spotted wearing Cartier

During the Rolling Stones' Steel Wheels Tour of 1989 — one of the most commercially successful rock tours in history to that point — Keith Richards was photographed clutching a Fender Telecaster while wearing a compact yellow gold Cartier Panthère on his left wrist. The Panthère de Cartier was introduced in 1983, though its symbolic roots run considerably deeper. In 1914, illustrator George Barbier created a panther motif for a Cartier jewellery exhibition poster; Louis Cartier adopted the big cat as a house emblem, and it eventually became synonymous with the bold jewellery pieces created by Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier's creative director from the 1930s onward. Long dismissed as a 'ladies' watch,' it has undergone serious reappraisal over the past decade, driven partly by the broader unisex watch movement and partly by high-profile male wearers — Richards being among the most significant. Cartier revived the Panthère officially in 2017 with updated references, lending fresh relevance to original 1980s examples.

Richards' relationship with fine jewellery and luxury accessories is well documented; rings stacked to the knuckle, scarves, and the occasional unexpected horological choice have long been part of his visual identity. The Panthère, worn loose on his wrist amid rings and road grime, reads less as a fashion statement and more as an instinctive pull toward an object of genuine craftsmanship.

On today's grey market, vintage yellow gold Panthère examples in good condition typically trade between $3,500 and $7,000 depending on size, condition, and provenance. The current Cartier Panthère de Cartier in yellow gold retails from approximately $8,150 for the small quartz reference, with larger and more complex versions commanding higher prices.
