Singer Will Pan spotted wearing a Richard Mille

Will Pan, one of Taiwan's most celebrated pop artists, was recently photographed wearing what is arguably one of the five most technically ambitious wristwatches ever produced: the Richard Mille RM 056 Tourbillon Split-Seconds Chronograph in sapphire, made in tribute to Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa. The sighting immediately drew attention from collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, and for good reason.

The RM 056 'Felipe Massa' debuted in 2012 and represented a watershed moment not just for Richard Mille but for the entire watchmaking industry. For the first time in horological history, a case was conceived, designed, and fully machined from solid blocks of synthetic sapphire crystal — a material with a Vickers hardness rating of approximately 2,000 HV, second only to diamond. Milling sapphire at the tolerances required for a complex, multi-component case demanded specialized tooling, an extraordinary rate of material loss during cutting, and production timelines measured in months per case. The result is a structure of almost supernatural visual transparency, allowing an unobstructed 360-degree view of the movement within.

Powering the RM 056 is the calibre RMCC1, the same manually wound movement architecture underpinning the RM 050. It incorporates a tourbillon regulator, a split-seconds (rattrapante) chronograph function, hours, minutes, and a power reserve indicator. The baseplate and bridges are crafted in grade-5 titanium, visible in their full engineering complexity through the sapphire case. The movement alone would be a collector's centerpiece; housed as it is here, it becomes something closer to a wearable sculpture.

The production run of exactly five pieces places the RM 056 FM in rarefied company. Each example was individually verified and delivered to collectors at an official retail price of $2,000,000 USD. Secondary market activity for this reference is virtually nonexistent — not because demand is lacking, but because owners rarely, if ever, sell. When examples do surface privately, asking prices exceed the original retail figure significantly.

Will Pan has long been associated with a discerning taste for high-end timepieces, and the RM 056 'Felipe Massa' is precisely the kind of watch that transcends the category of luxury accessory. It is a technical document — proof of what sapphire machining and haute horlogerie can achieve together. On Pan's wrist, one of only five examples in existence is getting exactly the visibility such an object deserves.
