Axl Rose, lead vocalist of Guns N' Roses, was recently spotted on the wrist with one of the most technically unusual watches produced in the last decade — the HYT Skull Maori, reference 513-CB-43-RF-MV, a hydro-mechanical timepiece limited to just 15 examples globally.

HYT — an acronym for Hydro Mechanical Horologists — built its reputation by replacing the conventional hour hand with a pressurized capillary tube system. Two micro-bellows, one containing a colored fluid and one a clear fluid, are mechanically actuated to push the luminescent liquid along a curved tube that tracks the hours in retrograde fashion. The minutes are displayed via a conventional hand on a subdial. The movement powering the Skull Maori is a manually wound caliber developed in collaboration with Chronode, delivering approximately 65 hours of power reserve. The 43mm case is constructed from carbon composite, keeping the weight low despite the complex fluid architecture housed within.

The Skull Maori variant is among the most elaborate in HYT's Skull collection. The carbon case and dial architecture are overlaid with deeply engraved Maori-inspired tattoo motifs — a cultural visual language associated with strength, identity, and spiritual protection. The combination of tribal engraving on a carbon skull-form case with bioluminescent fluid time display makes this reference one of the most visually extreme pieces in modern independent watchmaking. At 15 pieces, it sits firmly in the territory of custom-commission-level exclusivity.

Axl Rose has long cultivated an image built on excess and individualism, and his watch choices reflect that sensibility. The HYT Skull Maori is not a status symbol in any conventional sense — it requires explanation, it provokes questions, and it rewards the curious. For a performer who has spent four decades refusing easy categorization, it is a logical fit.

The HYT Skull Maori ref. 513-CB-43-RF-MV carried a UK list price of approximately £90,000 at launch, translating to roughly $112,000–$115,000 USD at prevailing rates. HYT entered financial restructuring in recent years before being acquired and relaunched, which has added scarcity pressure to existing references. On the secondary market, documented sales of Skull variants in comparable configurations have approached or exceeded retail, and with only 15 examples in existence, meaningful grey-market pricing data remains thin.
