The setting is a private jet cabin, somewhere in the 1970s or early 1980s. Gianni Agnelli, chairman of Fiat and the closest thing postwar Italy produced to an aristocratic industrialist, sits in shirtsleeves with a conspicuously dark chronograph riding above his cuff — his famous personal affectation that turned a sartorial violation into a signature. The watch in question is the Orfina Porsche Design Chronograph in black anodized steel, one of the defining instrument watches of its era.

Launched in 1972, the Porsche Design Chronograph was conceived by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche as the ultimate expression of Bauhaus functionalism applied to the wrist. The first production runs were manufactured by Orfina, a Swiss movement house, before the contract later passed to IWC. The case and integrated bracelet are crafted from stainless steel with a matte black anodized PVD finish — radical at the time, when polished gold and silver dials still dominated fine watchmaking. The movement is the Valjoux 7750 automatic, a robust column-wheel-adjacent ebauche that offered day-date display via the aperture visible at 3 o'clock on this dial. The tachymetre bezel scale, printed chapter ring, and orange chronograph seconds hand are all consistent with the Orfina-era references produced between approximately 1972 and 1978.

For collectors, Orfina-signed examples are the holy grail of the Porsche Design lineage. They predate the better-documented IWC references and carry genuine tool-watch patina — the worn PVD on surviving examples is considered honest aging rather than damage. The dial layout visible here, with three subsidiary registers, luminous baton indices, and the distinctive Porsche Design logo at 9 o'clock, places this firmly in the first-generation Orfina production run.

Agnelli's relationship with watches was famously unconventional. He wore Rolexes over wetsuit sleeves and Pateks above French cuffs. His choice of the Orfina Porsche Design — an industrial, aggressively functional piece — over something from his own nation's luxury establishment speaks to a genuine connoisseurship unconstrained by brand politics. The same watch later appeared on Tom Cruise's wrist in the original Top Gun (1986), cementing its pop-culture status independently of its horological credentials.

On today's grey market, first-generation Orfina Porsche Design Chronographs in wearable condition trade between $3,500 and $7,000 depending on dial condition and bracelet completeness. An Agnelli-associated provenance would place any example in an entirely different conversation.
