Who & what: Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Steel Reference 116520 – Michaël Youn Spotted Wearing Iconic Chronograph

French actor Michaël Youn was recently spotted with a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona reference 116520 on his wrist — a stainless steel sports chronograph that needs little introduction in collector circles, yet continues to reward closer inspection.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 116520 entered production in 2000, replacing the legendary 16520 and bringing an entirely new movement architecture to the line. Rolex developed the caliber 4130 in-house, a column-wheel chronograph movement beating at 28,800 vph with a 72-hour power reserve. The 4130 is widely regarded as one of the most reliable and serviceable chronograph calibers in modern watchmaking — vertically clutched, COSC-certified, and engineered for longevity. The 40mm oyster case in 904L stainless steel houses a dial protected by a sapphire crystal, with a tachymetric scale engraved into the fixed ceramic-insert bezel on later production runs, though early 116520 references retained the older engraved steel bezel configuration.

The 116520 ran until 2016, when Rolex introduced the reference 116500LN, updating the bezel to Cerachrom ceramic. That transition immediately elevated the 116520's collector standing. Purists who preferred the engraved bezel aesthetic and the steel-on-steel look found their reference. The black-dial and white-dial variants attract different collector personalities, with the white dial — sometimes called the "panda" configuration — commanding a modest premium on the secondary market.

Michaël Youn built his reputation through anarchic French comedies and television work that placed him firmly in the mainstream of French popular culture. His taste in watches appears to align with a classically grounded sensibility — the Daytona 116520 is neither flashy nor obscure; it is simply the correct answer for a serious steel sports chronograph at the Rolex tier.

On the grey market, the 116520 trades well above its original retail price, which was approximately $12,400 USD at discontinuation. Demand has remained durable, with clean examples in full set commanding premiums that reflect both the model's pedigree and the scarcity introduced by its successor. For collectors, the 116520 represents the Daytona at peak mechanical maturity — before ceramic, but after quartz.
