Captured in profile during what appears to be a live performance or recording session, Miles Davis wears a Breitling Navitimer on his left wrist, the chronograph's distinctive circular slide rule bezel clearly legible even in black-and-white. The watch sits over what looks like a wristband, worn with the casual authority Davis brought to everything from modal jazz to electric fusion.

The Breitling Navitimer debuted in 1952, developed in partnership with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) as a wrist-mounted flight computer. Its defining feature — the bidirectional rotating bezel with logarithmic slide rule scale — allowed pilots to calculate airspeed, fuel consumption, rate of climb, and distance without a separate instrument. Powered by various Valjoux-based movements across its early decades, the Navitimer was one of the first watches to make mechanical complexity genuinely utilitarian.

Based on the case proportions, dial layout, and the period context of Davis's most photographed years (late 1960s through 1970s), this example is consistent with a Navitimer reference 806 or its close successor, the 7806. The ref. 806 ran from 1954 through the early 1970s and featured a 41mm steel case, Venus 178 or Valjoux 72 movement, and the hallmark double-register chronograph layout with the AOPA wings logo at 12 o'clock. The watch on Davis's wrist shows the characteristic wide bezel and large crown at 3 o'clock consistent with these references.

For collectors, the Navitimer 806 represents the purest expression of Breitling's mid-century identity — before quartz disruption, before conglomerate ownership, when the brand existed almost entirely to serve aviation professionals. Original examples in honest condition command significant premiums on the secondary market, with the AOPA-logo variants particularly sought after.

Miles Davis's relationship with objects of precision craft — custom clothes, fast cars, fine instruments — makes the Navitimer a logical choice. A tool watch worn by an artist who treated improvisation as its own form of engineering. The pairing is, in retrospect, obvious.
