Who & what: Black DLC Titanium Jacob & Co Astronomia Solar Planetary Tourbillon – Limited to 9 Pieces (AS800.21.AB.AB.A)

Shahlo Ahmedova, one of Uzbekistan's most-followed pop artists, was recently photographed inside what appears to be a high-end jewellery showroom, her left wrist carrying one of the most complicated — and scarce — wristwatches available to civilian collectors: the Jacob & Co Astronomia Solar in black DLC titanium, limited to nine pieces globally.

The Astronomia Solar sits at the apex of Jacob Arabo's design language. Its movement, the calibre JCAM09, runs at 21,600 vph and deploys four satellite arms that complete one full revolution around the dial every 10 minutes. Each arm carries a distinct complication: a triple-axis tourbillon (completing rotations on its three axes in 60 seconds, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes respectively), a 288-facet Jacob-cut diamond rotating on its own axis, a time display on a rotating sub-dial, and a hand-painted representation of Earth. The outer bezel ring is engraved with the zodiac constellations, and the case stretches to a commanding 47mm — large even by contemporary standards.

The black edition visible on Ahmedova's wrist substitutes the standard rose-gold case for a DLC-treated titanium shell, lending the piece a stealthy, almost industrial contrast against the technicolour gemstone planets — red jasper for Mars, blue topaz for Earth's moon, and a central sapphire crystal sphere. This colourway is the rarest Astronomia Solar configuration, with only nine references released, making it statistically less available than many one-of-a-kind commissioned pieces from smaller independent ateliers.

From a collector standpoint, the Astronomia Solar occupies an unusual position: it is simultaneously a serious horological achievement and an unapologetically maximalist statement piece. Critics who favour restraint often cite it alongside Urwerk as evidence of haute horlogerie's theatrical wing; admirers point to the genuinely complex triple-axis tourbillon as justification for its price tier. Either way, secondary market appetite for the black edition remains strong, with few examples ever surfacing publicly.

At a UK list price of approximately £240,000 — translating to roughly $300,000 USD at prevailing rates — the Astronomia Solar Black is not a casual acquisition. Ahmedova's choice signals both serious financial means and a collector sensibility that reaches well beyond conventional luxury watch categories, placing her in the company of rappers, Gulf royalty, and a handful of tech billionaires who have publicly worn the same reference.
